This was a post from May 2010 – On Saturday May 7 at the Jasper Farmers Market, Zach White talked about his top ten annuals that you can plant in Pickens County and that will thrive all summer long. Everyone had a wonderful time. At the end of the talk, Zach gave away a flat of annuals with all the flowers that he discussed.

10-Profusion Zinnia’s-has great summer long color and thrives in full sun and has high tolerance of heat and humidity and drought and mildew tolerance.
9-“Pizzazz” Begonias– works great in full sun or part shade, has great color and is low maintenance.
8-Wave Petunias– Grow in waves with great color. 1 plant can grow 3-4 ft. Great for containers trailing and in beds. Thrives in full sun and are very drought and heat tolerant.
7-Mandvilla Vines– My favorite varieties are Alice DuPont, which is pink and Red Velvet, which of course, is red. It will grow up street poles on campus and great for a mailbox or trellis. Very drought tolerant.
6-Lantana-“New gold”, a gold flower color or Dallas red, which is red – these are my 2 favorite varieties. Attracts butterflies and are drought tolerant and low maintenance. Listed as a plant that deer rarely browse, great for the Bent Tree and Big Canoe area.
5-Extreme Mix Impatients is my favorite Impatient. More heat and drought tolerant than others. They have great color and have can live over the winter under shaded, moist back porches.
4-Ornamental Sweet Potato Vines are very drought tolerant. One plant can spread 5 ft plus and thrives in full sun and has leaf color.
3-Angelonia is full sun to part shade. Has great color all summer long, called summer Snapdragons. Great in containers as center piece or backdrop.
2-Dragon Wing Begonias, great color all summer longer until fall. Drought tolerant and low maintenance. One plant can fill a 10 inch pot by the end of summer (used at the Woodbridge Inn in Jasper)
1-Celosia is listed as High Degree of Deer Tolerance. Fairly drought tolerant but keep moist as established. Full sun with great color. Will grow 1-2 ft. Will bloom all the way until frost, has slowly become my favorite annual at Reinhardt University.
