The Georgia Marble Festival 5K Run ~ Our neighbors texted us on Wednesday evening before the Marble Festival race to see if we were planning to run on Saturday morning. I texted back that we hadn’t planned to and asked if they were. They said if we were running, they were going to run too. No Pressure…so we said we would and we all signed up the evening of the last day that we were eligible. On Friday after work, I went to the church to pick up our shirts and numbers and we were ready.
On Saturday morning, our neighbor texted again to say that her husband, Mike was sick and wouldn’t be running in the race and asked if she could ride with us. When we got to town at about 7:50am before the race, it was about 39-40 degrees… There were over 700 or so race participants who wore sweats and jackets, gloves and scarves or just their running shorts and shoes…
This was the first year that the race started at the edge of Main Street by the wooden bridge going to The Woodbridge Inn. Getting to run through downtown Jasper was a pretty unique experience, with all the people yelling and encouraging the runners on. We started off running down Main Street in a mass of people but as we reached 61 Main and the Keep Pickens Beautiful building, the crowd started to thin out. Now the really serious ones were already way out in front so they had nothing to deal with except the wide, open road!
The race was awesome. Talked with some really great people along the way and my neighbor Nancy and I caught up on what’s going on in Bent Tree. Hubbs stayed with us for a while but he finally took off and was only 1 minute off his race time last year. Congrats to him.
Big time Congrats goes to Alex Stolz with a time of 16:28 (average 5.25 mile) and Faith Bobak with a time of 19:13 (average 6.17 mile). Congratulations goes to everyone else who took the time to come out and run/walk and for all the volunteers who helped to make this 34 Annual Georgia Marble Festival 5K event happen.
