Pickens County’s First Snowfall

November 29, 2011 by Beth Leave a Comment

Tuesday, November 29, 2011 – The Earliest Snow Fall in 12 Years!

Yup…it’s officially time to get in the Christmas Spirit! 2″ of sticky, snowman stuff fell on Sassafras Mountain today, says Susan Catton, who lives up on Sassafras Mountain!

On Monday, the temperature started dropping and the forecast was the “S” word! You could just imagine everyone running to the grocery and convenient stores to buy milk, bread, beer and cigarettes!!! It was only up in the mountains of Pickens County where there was any accumulations at all and some saw up to 2″ of snow.

At the time of my typing this post, the temperatures are 37 degrees so more than likely, that ‘S’ word has come and gone, or is mostly gone…but it sure is pretty to look at!

Are You Holiday Shopping Online This Season?

November 18, 2011 by Beth Leave a Comment

10 Tips To Avoid ID Theft This Holiday Season

Jasper pickens county ga

The holidays are approaching and it’s time to start shopping for those special gifts. Last year, consumers spent a holiday-season record $32.6 billion online, according to comScore. Unfortunately, with so much personal financial information out there, instances of identity theft are on the rise. According to the Federal Trade Commission, as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.

While some victims of identity theft resolve their problems quickly, others spend thousands of dollars and months repairing the damage done to their credit. Some identity theft victims may even lose out on job opportunities or be denied loans for education, housing or cars because of negative information on their credit reports. In rare cases, they may even be arrested for crimes they did not commit.

“Anyone who shops online is vulnerable to having their identity compromised,” says Jamie Haenggi, chief marketing and customer experience officer at Protection 1, the nation’s second-largest security company. The company recently partnered with LifeLock to include identity theft protection in its offerings. “The proper precautions, combined with identity theft protection, are the strongest safeguards to protecting your credit and preventing the financial hardships that can be caused when an identity is stolen.”

Haenggi offers the following tips to better protect your identity when shopping online this holiday season:

1. Shop trusted names
Stick with sites like Amazon.com, Target.com or other familiar retailers. Beware of misspellings or domain names using “.net” instead of “.com” as that is one of the most common ways scammers trick consumers.

2. Look for the lock
A secure website starts with “https://” instead of “http://.” Secure sites will also have a small lock icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. Never give anyone your credit card through email. PayPal, however, is still a good, safe way to make a payment.

3. Don’t share too much
No store needs your social security number or your birthday. In the hands of the wrong person, combined with your credit card number, serious damage can be done. Always give up the least amount of personal information possible.

4. Check billing statements
Check statements for credit and debit cards, and monitor checking accounts regularly. If you see any charges you don’t recognize, address the matter immediately. Don’t pay credit card bills until you know all your charges are accurate. You have 30 days to notify the bank or card issuer of problems. After that, you might be liable for the charges.

5. Use stronger passwords
With so many online accounts – banking, credit cards, email – it’s common practice to recycle simple passwords that can be easily recalled. Use uncrackable passwords, especially when banking and shopping. Your password is weak if:
* It uses numbers or letters in the order they appear on the keyboard (“1234” or “qwerty”)
* It’s the name of your kids, pet, favorite team, or city of birth
* It’s your birthday, anniversary, date of graduation, or car license plate number
* It’s “letmein,” or, especially, “password.”

7. Think mobile
The National Retail Federation predicts that 25 percent of adults will do online browsing with their smartphones to find gifts. Buck this trend and download store-specific apps like those for Amazon.com and make your purchase without going to their website.

8. Stay at home
Do all online shopping at home so you know you’re using a trusted, secure network.

9. Enroll in an identity theft protection service
Having a service provider you trust is important. Advanced technology and helpful customer service are “musts” for identifying and remedying any fraud issues. Protection 1 is now offering identity theft protection in every new HomeCore Solution home security package at www.Protection1.com.

10. Use insurance
Just in case you do become the victim of identity theft, having insurance is vital to help recoup any lost money. Coverage typically costs from $20 to $100 a year as a rider to a basic homeowner’s policy or as a stand-alone purchase.

Follow these simple tips, and you can help to ensure your family – and your property – remain safe year-round.

It’s Egg-Time, Be Sure To Eat Your Eggs

November 17, 2011 by Beth Leave a Comment

Go ahead, be an egghead: fortified eggs benefit the brain

(ARA) – Egg consumption is on the rise, and not just at Easter. According to the American Egg Board, each American eats about 250 eggs annually – 20 eggs more per person every year than people were eating two decades ago. And there are many ways to enjoy eggs of all kinds of varieties, from colors to sizes to omega-3 fortified eggs.

“Eggs can be part of a healthy, low-fat diet and are a great source of protein,” says registered dietitian Elizabeth Somer, author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness.” “You can eat up to six eggs per week.”

Eggs on the brain
Years ago Americans used to eat plenty of omega-3s. Today, given our diet of highly processed foods, we don’t. Studies suggest that’s a cause for concern. Omega-3s have a remarkable impact on the body, especially as it relates to boosting brain health.

Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for overall health but must be consumed from the foods, beverages or supplements we take, as our bodies cannot produce them. There are three key omega-3s: DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). DHA offers the broadest array of health benefits, including brain, eye and heart health. EPA has been shown to support heart health, and may also be beneficial for some autoimmune and inflammatory disorders while ALA has been shown to help lower the risk for heart disease.

Many egg producers are now offering omega-3 fortified eggs because the typical American consumes only 80 milligrams of DHA daily, far less than the daily recommendation of 200 milligrams of DHA omega-3. Some populations have even higher DHA recommendations – for example, at least 300 milligrams per day of DHA is recommended for pregnant and nursing women.

“Of the three key omega-3s, DHA and EPA are the big guns; even then, DHA is by far the most powerful because DHA can be converted to EPA in our bodies. DHA-fortified eggs are a great source for getting the DHA omega-3 our bodies need,” says Somer.

Some omega-3s naturally occur in eggs, but to achieve higher levels, egg producers fortify the hen’s diet with omega-3s. Two common sources used are chia and flaxseed, which are rich sources of the plant-based omega-3 ALA.

To increase DHA levels in eggs, a sustainable, vegetarian source of DHA omega-3 from algae called life’sDHA is now being used. Three egg producers offering algal DHA-fortified eggs are Oakdell Egg Farms, Gold Circle Farms and ISE America. These brands contain more than 100 milligrams of DHA per egg – two eggs would meet the suggested daily allowance for DHA.

Eggs of every color
Many supermarkets are now carrying brown eggs. According to the Egg Nutrition Center, the color difference is due to the specific breed of hen. Eggs may also come in speckled, even blue finishes, but there is no nutritional difference among the hues.

Recipes
Most recipes call for large eggs. If only small eggs are available, add an extra egg for every egg the recipe calls for beginning with two. Add two extra eggs for recipes calling for five or more. For jumbo eggs, use one fewer egg with recipes calling for three or more eggs.

Hard-cooked eggs in three easy steps

Hard-cooked eggs are an inexpensive and portable snack. Despite the more common name of “hard-boiled eggs,” it is better to hard cook them to ensure the yolks don’t turn green, which is harmless.

1. Use eggs that are a week to 10 days old as they are easier to peel than fresh eggs. Add enough eggs to line a small sauce pan so eggs are not prone to roll into one another and crack. Cover eggs with water. Heat on high until water is just to a boil and remove from burner. Cover pan.
2. Let eggs stand for 12 to 15 minutes.
3. Drain immediately to serve warm or cool in a bowl of ice water.

The American Egg Board recommends that eggs with shells on can be refrigerated for up to one week and to store them in their original carton to prevent odor absorption. Eggs should be consumed the same day they are peeled.

Directions:
Warm tortilla and fill with: one whole egg and one egg white, scrambled, cheddar cheese, salsa, tomato and cilantro.

Total DHA tally: 116 mg omega-3 DHA

Veggie Omelet:

1/4 cup broccoli pieces
2 tablespoons sliced yellow onion
2 medium whole DHA-fortified eggs

FUN FOR ALL at the PICKENS FUR BALL!

November 12, 2011 by Beth Leave a Comment

PAR 5th Annual FurBall

BY JOAN WILSON-BARNES

The Pickens Animal Rescue (PAR) Fifth Annual Fur Ball was a huge success. The food, catered by Coast2Coast, was outstanding, music, dance lessons, and trivia entertainment provided by DJ, Jesse Giles, was almost too much fun, and the Heads-or-Tails bead game was full of suspenseful but friendly competition. Silent Auction participants went home with new relaxation, recreational, and home decorating treasures. Everyone enjoyed both the creative art and the different flavors of the multiple layers of the cake prepared by the Dough Boys.

Anne Roberts, PAR Board Member and Administrator of PAWs on Main, spoke about the Spay/Neuter program that PAWs on Main and other local organizations, including Pickens County Animal Control Shelter, are providing to the area. The attendees viewed a video and slide show of the great work being done by PAWs on Main as well as at the PAR Ranch. Many of the 186 PAR pets that found Furever homes this year were showcased as were some of the new adoptive owners. If you have pets that have not been spayed or neutered, please contact PAWs on Main about this initiative.

PAR President, Valerie Bates, gave an overview of the PAR organization and its three branches: PAWs on Main, the PAR Thrift Store, and the Rescue Ranch. She talked about the cost of caring for pets that come to the PAR Ranch and the necessity to turn many away due to the increased number of homeless pets that the current economic slowdown has caused and the concurrent decline in adoptions. The numbers tell the story:

YEAR ADOPTIONs and FEES
2007 $60,000 – more than 500 pets adopted
2008 $53,000 – more than 500 pets adopted
2009 $37,000 – more than 500 pets adopted
2010 $22,000 – more than 500 pets adopted
2011 Year to Date only $11,000 – 186 PETS ADOPTED

Because PAR is a no kill animal rescue organization, the fewer adoptions mean fewer pets can be rescued. Too many must be turned away each and every day to try to survive on their own. All pets that are available for adoption (see www.pickensanimalrescue.org for available pets) have been spayed or neutered, micro chipped, and are current on all their shots and preventive medicines.

You can help in these times of need by making a donation to PAR at PAWs on Main or The PAR Thrift Store, both on North Main, at www.pickensanimalrescue.org, or one of the many retail locations that have PAR donation boxes. Donations of furniture and household goods to the PAR Thrift Store are also appreciated. Volunteers are always needed on adoption days at PetSmart in Woodstock, at the PAR Ranch throughout the week, at the PAR Thrift Store and at various events throughout the year. And, if you can provide a foster home for one or more pets that allows more pets to be rescued and cared for. Of course the ultimate gift to PAR, the animals there, and to you and your family is to adopt a new family member from PAR.

No great success happens without a concerted effort from a lot of devoted, talented people. In the case of the Fur Ball, the following people and sponsors made the smashing success possible: A special thanks goes out to our 2011 Sponsors; Todd W. Hall Company, PC Co-Pilots, ViSalus-Ginger Hall, KDA Communications, Jasper Dental Associates, Nature’s Farmacy, Lakota Cove, Foothills Dental Associates, Kiker Wealth Management, Gary and Camille Hammond, Guerry and Carol Massey, Smoke Signals On-Line, ETC, KnowPickens.com, Custom Home Structures, Critter Sitters Inc., Pit-Stop Portables, Junktiques, Suzanne Bryant, Venue2Remember, Maria and Dan Ashby, Rick Jung, Trout’s Beverage, Dough Boys Cakes and Catering, Appalachian Country Magazine, JasperPickensCountyGA.com and the Pickens Progress. The Silent Auction is a very important and popular part of this fundraising event, so a huge thank you goes out to the eighty five plus donors who contributed items to be bid on this year. (See www.pickensfurball.org)

These Volunteers helped make this a successful event; Susan Catton and Marilyn Pitts – 2011 Fur Ball Co-Chairs, Julie Whitworth, Kathe Hall, Carol Massey, Artistic Designs, Joan Barnes, Anne Roberts, Maria Ashby, Becky Jaye, Sue Parker, Susan Kent, Janis Kleinberger, Ralph Hilliard, Jeff Catton, Bryan and Charlotte McInerney, Merlyn Jacobs, John McCarthy, Jacqie Dunn, Sadie Jo Cornett, Ginny Morris, Brooklin Lyon, Mari Livesy, Allison Brown and Alvin Stewart Photography. (See event photos at www.KnowPickens.com)

The Fur Ball is held on the first Saturday of November each year. Please make plans now to attend next year and help provide spay/neuter services and care for homeless pets in our community. Each person can make an important difference to our County’s pet population. Please remember the pets as winter begins.

We hope to see you at the 2012 Fur Ball.
