The two winners that were present are labeled along with good pictures of the winning salsas. The winning salsa that is pictured by itself belongs to Janet Smith.
There were two categories to judge: Fresh and Canned salsa.
Judging was done by Farmer’s Market attendees and cost $1 per person. Each person was given a bowl of chips and two slips of paper to vote on: one for fresh and one for canned.
There were seven (7) canned entries and eight (8) fresh entries.
All proceeds go to CARES of Pickens County (Community Assistance Resources and Emergency Services)
The Master Gardeners of Pickens County organized and ran the event.
The winner of the canned salsa was Master Gardener June McKenzie.
There was an unexpected tie for the fresh salsa category: Janet Smith (pictured) and Curtis Robinson (not present).
Winners were given $25 in Market Bucks to spend with vendors at the Farmer’s Market. Since the fresh category had two winners, they split the prize.
The turn out was a great even with the extremely high temperatures and humidity.
Thank You Jessica, great pictures and great information – we love it! And Congrats to the winners and participants of the 2nd Annual Jasper Farmers Market Salsa Contest.
The NASA spacecraft Juno, en route to an unprecedented exploration of Jupiter and the origins of the solar system, lifted off today around 12:30pm edt from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Juno will embark on a five-year trip and arrive at Jupiter in July 2016.
The mission costs an estimated $1.1 billion and scientists believe it’ll be well worth it. It will give us an unprecedented look into Jupiter’s secrets.
Juno will be the first human-made, solar-powered spacecraft to fly to Jupiter. It’s scheduled to fly over Jupiter’s poles and investigate the planet’s atmosphere, magnetic and gravity fields as well as Jupiter’s fierce winds, which blow at speeds up to 370 miles per hour. At the end of its journey, Juno will have made 33 orbits around Jupiter, after which it will crash into the giant gas planet.
Check out NASA’s animation describing details of Juno’s mission below.
