Rick Jasperse and the House of Representatives

March 30, 2010 by Beth Leave a Comment

Per Rick Jasperse – March 30, 2010~

Today, I qualified for the District 12 House seat at the Secretary’s of States office. Pretty exciting and quite a sense of responsibility came over me when I signed that sheet.

We are hitting the trail full speed ahead during the next 5 weeks. I do need your help to be elected as your next State Representative.

Please go to my website rickjasperse.org and hit the volunteer tab. Let me know how you would like to be involved. We have lots of opportunities for everyone. We need to push hard to make sure everyone knows I am running and I would be a great representative for our district.

Oh yes, a fun thing happened while I was at the capitol ,I met Jennifer Nettles and had my picture made with her. She was a 4 H counselor back a few years ago and was there in support of Georgia 4 H.

Thanks Rick

When you talk with Rick, tell him you saw this on www.jasperpickenscountyga.com and decided to give him a call to see just what he is going to do for you and your family!

An open message from one of our own – Rick Jasperse~

I am Rick Jasperse, and I am running for the House of Representatives for the 12th District, which includes Pickens and portions of Gordon and Bartow Counties.  I have retired as County Extension Agent after 29 years from Pickens, Bartow, and Bleckley Counties.  I will continue to work for the people of this area to represent us in our State Capitol and to address our concerns in an effective manner.  I will make a difference and have the courage to do so.  I need your vote on July 20, 2010.

Check out Rick’s web site www.rickjasperse.org and be sure to cast your vote for Rick on July 2oth!

Checking Out Boone, North Carolina

March 28, 2010 by Beth Leave a Comment

Today Ken and I drove over to Boone, North Carolina. We dodged two (2) rock slides and were able to cruise right into Boone, but boy did we take the ‘scenic route’ with the winding two lane roads, through lots of mountain towns with views of the rivers, boaters and rafters. Thank You GPS!!!

Anyway, on our way through the town of Boone to our hotel, we were checking out the local restaurants. You don’t stay in business in a tourist/college town if you’re not good… so we were looking for either seafood (my fav) or BBQ Ribs (Ken’s fav).

We saw several local restaurants and once we got to the hotel and check in, asked the front desk about the local favorites. Of course, it really is what you are in the mood for and tonight, it ended up being Ribs! And the restaurant we chose was Bandana’s Bar B Que…

Bandana’s Bar-B-Que & Grill is a casual dining restaurant with a full menu, specializing in wood-smoked Bar-B-Que. Bandana’s serves great Southern style Bar-B-Que and more. They use a unique blend of locally sourced wood to smoke their meats on the premises. We tried their Rib and Rib Platter as they had such a selection of ribs and Bar-B-Q and we were having a hard time deciding so we decided to try the Rib & Rib combination platter and are so glad that we did. It is a rib lover’s dream come true!

The Rib and Rib combo was Baby Back Ribs and St. Louis Ribs. The Baby Back Ribs had a sauce on them which was exceptional and the St. Louis Ribs were dry rubbed. They were both excellent but both Ken and I leaned toward the St. Louis Ribs. We were able to put our own sauce on them and the ribs were more meatier…yum yum!

We had the classic beans and slaw with our meal and the whole dish was excellent. I would recommend Bandana’s to anyone who is in the Boone, North Carolina area and looking for some good que…this is definitely the place. We may even try them out tomorrow for lunch…the slow-smoked chopped Bar-B-Que sandwich served on a large toasted bun sounded excellent. Of course, we will have to have slaw and beans with our meal to make it complete.

On Sunday morning, we didn’t get up in time for breakfast at the hotel, so we headed out in search of a good brunch. The gentleman at the front desk recommended a restaurant that was similar to Cracker Barrell but when we got there, there was such a wait that we decided to go out and search for another restaurant. Now it is raining and we do not know this area at all and when we see Troy’s 105 Diner, we whip in via the exit…and are we glad that we did.

Troy’s 105 Diner is something you would find on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive in and Dives. The place was a classic 50’s – 60’s diner with Elvis records on the wall, jukebox and a menu to match. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast of French Toast, Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon and coffee. We were ready for this wonderful meal too.

If you’re ever in Boone and need a breakfast recommendation, definitely try Troy’s 105 Diner located at 1286 Highway 105, Boone, NC 28607-7804 – (828) 265-1344?

A Little Information About Pickens County, GA

March 28, 2010 by Beth Leave a Comment

Archives of Pickens County

From the editors of
Roadside Georgia

Established in 1853, Pickens County was named for South Carolina military leader and politician Andrew Pickens, who fought the Cherokee in 1760 and 1782. During the Revolution he was awarded a sword for the victory at Cowpens. He also served in the state house. Some locals claim that the name is something of a joke and was actually taken because the county got the “pickin’s”, a Georgia term implying the best, of Cherokee and Gilmer Counties

 Cemetery at Tate, Georgia
Tate Cemetery
Tate, Georgia
The Tate Family controlled Pickens county in the early 1900’s. Located just past the Tate train depot on Highway 53
At the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains, the story of present-day Pickens County begins with the Cherokee Indians, who had a major settlement here (The Long Swamp Branch). These American Indians were forced to cede land further east as punishment for siding with the British during the Revolutionary War. In 1782, Col. Pickens hung 6 loyalists near present-day Nelson.
Pickens was one of the earliest counties with white encroachers (probably pre-Revolution) near Talking Rock. These early settlers later ran inns and taverns to accommodate the travelers on the Old Federal Highway which bisected the county.
In an area known as Taloney to the Cherokee and Talona Station to early whites, missionaries, most notably Dr. Elizur Butler, constructed an elaborate development which they used to educate the Cherokee with the blessing of Cherokee Nation. The original deed for the land, one of the first issued by the Cherokee bears the signature of Return J. Meigs, local Cherokee agent. James Monroe, President of the United States, spent the night of May 19, 1819 in the Harnage House, at the site of the present-day Tate House. On his journey through Cherokee Country he was accompanied by 3 other men.

External events began to shape the history of the county starting with the North Georgia Gold Rush. Although the area today known as Pickens did not share directly in the event, miners would use the Federal Highway to get to Lumpkin County and the area grew. When the State of Georgia created the original Cherokee County, encompassing 6900 square miles of land formerly controlled by Native Americans, the first courthouse was in the Harnage House. The spring house on the grounds of the Tate House is the only remaining building from this time. In 1830 Corn “George” Tassel allegedly murdered another Cherokee near Talking Rock. Tassel was tried in Hall County and murdered by the state in Gainesville.

Among the missionaries who taught with Dr. Butler at Carmel was the Rev. Issac Procter. Samuel Austin Worcester, Rev. Proctor and Doctor Butler were arrested by the Georgia Guard in March, 1831 and charged with disobeying a law that required all whites working on Cherokee land to have a license. The law, passed the previous year, had been specifically designed to eliminate the missionaries who were friendly to the Cherokee. If the state could extend its laws over the Cherokee, their Nation would no longer be sovereign and would not be protected by the federal government. Tried and convicted in Gwinnett County, the men sat in jail while the case was appealed to the Supreme Court, who ruled that the state could not extend it’s laws onto the Cherokee Nation. The ruling was unenforced by President Andrew Jackson.

In the spring of 1838 the tribe was rounded up, along with other Cherokee and herded into Talking Rock Fort (also known as Fort Newnan) and Fort Buffington(near Canton, Ga.), Removal Forts until they moved north to Rattlesnake Springs (now Tennessee) and began a journey to Oklahoma on The Trail of Tears.

Sam Tate, a settler from Gainesville, won parcels of land in Pickens County during the Land Lottery of 1832. Packing twelve children and his wife in a wagon, Tate moved to the county and built a home.

As early as 1836 marble was being quarried in Jasper. Over the next 25 years this area changed little. In 1861, to protest the secession of the state, residents here flew the Union flag for nearly a month. During the Civil War Pickens County remained strongly pro-Union, even after the initial Confederate victories. Only minor engagements occurred in the county.

After the war the county returned to its agrarian roots. The North Georgia railroad reached Jasper in 1883. Although this gave local farmers an additional outlet for the agricultural products raised in the area, moonshine would be economically important well into the 20th century. About this time Stephen Tate, son of Sam Tate, began to mine significant amounts of marble, although by 1890 less than $150,000.00 worth was being removed each year.

In 1906, the old Pickens County jail was torn down and replaced with the Jail to the right. Inside is a gallows that was never used. The building was used as a house for local sheriffs and prisoners until the federal government ordered it closed in 1981.

Col. Sam Tate, named for his grandfather, inherited his father’s marble quarry upon his death. He began to combine local quarries into a company he called Georgia Marble. By 1917 the consolidation was complete and in 1923 he began work on his palatial estate known as the “Pink Palace” on the site of the Harnage House. He personally selecting the marble used to build the home from a streak of rare pink marble from local quarry over a 4-year period. A rural aristocracy began to form with Tate and Cherokee County’s R. T. Jones at the core.

In 1930 a monument to James Oglethorpe was built on Grassy Knob. Renamed to Mount Oglethorpe in his honor, the peak served as the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Tate Mineral Springs and Simmons Mineral Springs were popular stops in Pickens at this time.

Today Pickens is enjoying a new boom. Jasper has become a popular retirement community, serviced by I-575. Marble production continues to this day, and the western part of the county supports significant agriculture.

Taking Care of Elderly Parents

March 26, 2010 by Beth Leave a Comment

– Getting Past “We’re Doing OK”

Compliments of Martin R. Sabel

When it comes to helping an elderly parent, you may get frustrated when they rebuff your offers to help. What do you do when you have a mom or dad who is not willing to cooperate with you? How do you handle a parent who says: “Everything is fine, honey. I appreciate your concern, but really, there is nothing to worry about”?

You get forced to the sidelines to worry about their safety. Frequently throughout the day you are tormented with thoughts about their well-being popping in and out of your head. Those worries are like “Chinese water torture” with a slow, maddening, unpredictable dripping of water on your forehead.

The simple truth is you may get denial the first time out. An undeniable reality is that as a caring adult child, you have limited authority. All you can really do, assuming mom or dad’s situation is not life-threatening or dangerous, is to let them know you are available if and when they need help.

Your parents are adults. If they choose to deny their needs and make bad decisions, they have the legal right to do so. They have their own needs and concerns and they have the right to make their own decisions – good or bad.

Look at it this way: If somebody walks into your home and starts bossing you around, telling you how to live your life, you won’t like it very much. Your mom or dad will feel the same way. They will like it even less it’s her son or daughter doing the bossing. Like it or not, you may be a successful 58-year-old, but to your mom, you’re still the kid whose butt she powdered. You are still her “kid”.

Reverse the Guilt Flow

One way to handle an elderly parent’s denial is to reverse the guilt flow. Approach it as, “Would you do it for me?” as opposed to, “You need to do this for you.” Try phrasing your concern in a way that says, “I need you to do this because it will help me” in some respect. It often gets their cooperation.

By taking this approach you are expressing your emotion about their situation. What comes through to your mom is, “I am really concerned that you could harm yourself or harm somebody else. I feel bad about this.”

It could turn their thinking around.

Rather than figuratively poking your finger on your dad’s chest saying, “Look, you need to make this change!” you are sitting down, holding both his hands and saying, “I have some concerns. Will you help me out?” Doing so “reverses the flow” and often gets their cooperation.

Magic Phrases That Melt Resistance

Listen to the way you sound when you talk to your mom. Are you pushy? Condescending? Starting sentences with any of the following phrases, screams disrespect for your mom or dad’s decision making ability:

“Mom you need to…”

“Can’t you see…”

“You’re being stubborn…”

“What you need to do is…”

Remember how you reacted when you were a teenager and you heard those same words coming out of her mouth? You didn’t like it much, right? You turned a deaf ear and refused to listen. Your mom won’t feel any different now that the roles are reversed.

Neutralize you parent’s tendency to argue by using phrases that are not judgmental. Pay attention to the words you use and how you frame your comments. You gain a more willing ear by beginning sentences with:

“I’m worried about…”

“I’d feel better if…”

“How do you feel about…”

Your approach will be perceived as less threatening and help you gain a more willing ear.

With the right information, you can reduce caregiver stress, keep your life in balance, save money and get better care for your elderly parents. To help you melt your parents resistance to talking about their care needs, I invite you to instantly access my FREE Weekly Eldercare Advisor. You’ll discover both practical caregiving strategies and important resources for taking care of elderly parents.
